A group calling themselves Bass Pipelines is putting together a proposal to pump water from Tasmania to the mainland. Tasmania has 14% of Australia’s rainfall and has water to spare. Bass Pipelines hopes to finish their proposal before the end of the year, and will then go looking for funding.

The water situation requires urgent and effective action by governments. Why does there seem to be no official interest shown in the Bass Pipelines plan? A bit of lateral thinking is in order by government rather than pressing on with a desalination factory that will deliver far less water for much greater cost to the environment, water users (everyone) and to taxpayers.
